The Easy Life?

When I visited America last summer, on TV I saw a pastor of a church that looked like it was in a stadium. He was well-dressed and was a great speaker. He was talking about suffering for a short time but that good things are coming soon. Those good things were a new job, a new house, and a promotion at work. I’ve watched him several different times and he usually talks about the same things. It’s a very attractive message. Good things are coming soon. You’re going to get wealthier. You’re going to get a little more comfortable than now. Does God give us good things in this lifetime? Absolutely. Many of us have experiences where God has provided us with amazing things that are more than we need. But is it fair for us to expect blessings and an easier life?

Two weeks ago Mark talked about traials of life. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were thrown into a furnace. This past Sunday I talked about the idea of “lack”. The rich man was lacking God and was unwilling to give up his comfort to follow Jesus.

Both messages are related, even though we didn’t plan it that way. At the center of the gospel is not the promise of an easy, trouble-free life. The gospel centers on Jesus, who doesn’t save us from suffering but enters it with us. He is the fourth person in the middle of fiery furnace. The gospel centers on the cross, where Jesus lacked everything and fully trusted in God to give us salvation. We certainly hope for God to save us from suffering and provide what is lacking. That is totally fine. But for us to be mature in Christ, let us embrace Jesus in the middle of our trials. Let us make the journey with Jesus as struggle with what we lack. He is a God who enters our incomplete lives and sits with us. He is a God who experiences the same pain as we do. That is a God I want to be with forever!
